If You Want Something Different, Do Something Different

Matthew 6:33; Proverbs 21:15; 16: 3

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Commit[a] your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.

Let us start by referencing the simplest definition of insanity once again – doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. This simple definition rides on the concept of patterns – that is, if something is done or organized in a certain way, then a specific result -consistent with those set of actions is expected. So, to obtain a different kind of result, those set of actions have to be altered – this is simple logic!

The beginning of a new year ushers in myriad possibilities, and opportunities. Many people are filled with aspirations for the year – hopes are renewed, interests are born, passions are rekindled, and commitments are re-established. These are all great; however, failure to begin with first things first would only lead to aborted dreams and futile efforts!

How do I mean? Our first endeavor should be focused on establishing our goals and purpose in life. By asking these questions below, you rightly position yourself for a successful year ahead:

What should I stop doing?

What should I continue doing?

What should I start doing?

All of the above questions should be considered in conjunction with our unique purposes and goals. Each of these questions requires extensive inward reflection and self-evaluation. Let’s take a closer look at each question.

What should I stop doing? With regards to your character, attitude, habits, behavior, lifestyle, etc., there are certain actions that should be stopped – either in your spiritual, professional, or personal life. The ability to identify/eliminate such actions is the first step to success.

What should I continue doing? Based on anecdotal evidence, you would have readily observed the set of actions that work – that is, certain things you do that consistently yield your desired results. Note these actions, and make a deliberate effort to keep doing those things.

What should I start doing? There is always room for improvement they say. Some actions (in attitude, behavior or lifestyle, etc) are success boosters. You need to identify/engage in actions that would launch you to the next level.  Identify those actions (within the boundaries of your life’s purpose/goals) that would position you for success.

Folks, success is not magic, luck or miracle – you’ve got to work it out, you’ve got to engage in the right set of actions and execute them in a timely manner, you’ve got to do the first things first!

Remember, the simple logic to keep in perspective is this:

‘If you want something different, then you have to do something different!’
