WHAT ARE YOU SEEKING?

Matthew 6: 19-21; 33 ;  Mark 10: 29-30 ; John 6: 37

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

After deep thought and reflection, it has become clear that most of us are currently engaged in seeking the wrong things. We are pouring our energy, time, resources, abilities, etc. into the mundane things of life. We focus on education, embrace careers, chase after money, seek power/fame, and pursue wealth. The quest for all these things define our daily endeavors, yearly goals, and ultimately life achievements.

Just to clarify – these pursuits are legitimate, but not necessarily the ultimate in the light of eternity. Fame, money, wealth, education, career, etc. are not the sole essence of life, nor the primary purpose of our existence. They might be necessary vehicles for our sustenance (if really) on earth; but however, are only the means through which we fulfill life’s purpose, or the reason for which we were created.

Matthew 6: 33 defines a higher purpose – that which should be the endeavor of every living soul.  We are encouraged to seek the things that pertain to God’s kingdom. Focusing all our energy into the furtherance of God’s kingdom, spreading the Gospel, and winning souls, is the weightier matter of all pursuits; a worthy and most viable endeavor! This essence of life should consume our desires, interests, and passion.

The Bible promises that when we focus on God’s business, He will focus on ours, because ‘all these things shall be added unto you’.  Is it not prudent to seek after God’s kingdom/righteousness, and in the process have all other necessities of life added to you effortlessly? It’s like killing two birds with one stone; or a ‘two-in-one’ kind of deal!

So what have you been seeking? What engages your attention? What endeavors consume your time mostly? Is it the ephemeral things of life, or the weightier matters of God’s kingdom? The mundane pursuits of life will not stand the test of eternity if there is no heavenly gain.

Therefore, align your efforts with things that make for eternal value. In all your pursuits, let kingdom benefit be the center of it all. Seek God’s kingdom; and watch God add all other benefits to your life!
