Matthew 15: 1-11; Luke 6: 45
When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [a]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Eating the right kind of food is vital to our physical growth and development. The body requires appropriate nutrients and minerals to flourish and be in good health. So likewise our spiritual body, soul, and mind – the right kind of spiritual food is required for spiritual growth.
Just as the mouth is a gateway through which the physical body receives food and nutrient, our senses are the gateways through which our soul and mind receive nutrient. Whatever information we pick up through our sensory organs (eyes, ears, etc.) serve as food for our soul and mind whether we realize it or not. This thought affirms the necessity to feed on the right kind of stuff if we must have a healthy and clean mind.
The Bible states that what comes out of the mouth is what defiles a man (Matthew 15: 11). But what comes out of the mouth is from the mind, because the Bible says out of the abundance of the heart (mind), the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). And the mind will only speak what it has been feeding on!
For instance, let’s focus on these two sensory organs: eyes and ears -it is paramount to watch what you see and hear on various platforms such as movies, TVs, social media, internet, billboards, music, magazines, books, discussion forums, gossips, etc., for whatever you eat (or feed on) through the eyes/ears make a direct deposit on your soul and mind!
The days we live in are evil; there is a need to be deliberate, intentional, and strategic with our minds – we have to be conscious and decisive about what information we allow/process in our sensory organs. The situation not only calls for a quick/swift action in discarding harmful information, but purposefulness in seeking/retaining Godly foods that would nourish our souls and minds.
Folks, it’s time to take stock of our lives – what have you been listening to? What have you been watching/seeing? What food have you been eating recently?
Remember, it is never too late to make amends.
Blessings!
