The Believer’s Authority

Luke 9:1-6; 10:19; Mark 16: 17-20; Philippians 2: 9-11

At the time of sending out the twelve disciples, Jesus vested in them the power and authority to cast out demons, heal diseases, and preach the kingdom of God. In other words, Jesus empowered the disciples to function in the same capacity as Himself. The same power and authority have been bestowed upon believers (John 14:12) to operate in certain capacity of rulership in this world; and enforce the reign of God’s kingdom here on earth.

The Greek word for power is ‘dunamis’; and in the context of the new testament, refers to the miraculous works in the Gospels (Matthew 23: 54; Mark 6:14, John 20:30). Authority is a license or warrant to perform; that is, the right to act without challenge or hindrance. There is a difference between power and authority – power is the ability to do something; while authority is the right to do something.

Usually, authority is employed by people in high position (by virtue of their office to) to enforce the law. Thus for authority to be exercised, there must be a ruler (master), and a subordinate (servant). The role of the ruler is to issue commands, and the responsibility of the subordinate is to execute the commands issued by the master.

The believer’s authority is over or against the kingdom of darkness: to trample on serpents and scorpions, and subdue All the powers of the enemy (Luke 10:17-19); to set the oppressed free from captivity (Luke 4: 18-19); to move mountains/difficulties, and change systems/situations in favor of Christ’s kingdom (Mark 11:23, Matthew 16:19).

Power and authority go hand in hand and are both necessary to enforce the law. Power without authority is abuse; while authority without power is useless. For instance, a policeman has been given power and authority to maintain law and order. Their badge is the symbol of authority; the gun, pepper spray, etc. is their power to act.

So likewise believers, we have been given the power, and authority to enforce God’s kingdom on earth. The Holy Spirit empowers us to do so; His presence in our lives gives us the authority to perform; while the name of Jesus and the word of God is our power to act. This power and authority are available to all believers (not just a chosen few) if willing and interested.

Folks, God has entrusted so much into our hands! The Bible states we would decree a thing and it shall be established (Job 22: 28), so if it is backed up by the name of Jesus/God’s word, demons will flee, and situations must change! We need to activate the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and begin to function in full capacity as Christ ambassadors.
