YOUR SENSES OR YOUR FAITH?

Hebrews 11: 1-40   ; 1 John 5: 4

for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

Research has it that the human nervous system is made up of fine sensory organs consisting of taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing. Our senses are the natural methods of perception – what we hear, see, touch, etc. are all received through their respective sensory organs, and are sent as messages to our brain for processing, which in turn influences our actions or behavior. In a nutshell, our entire system of behavior/response are controlled by what we perceive (through these sensory organs), and the interpretations we draw from it.

Now let’s look at faith – the bible defines faith as the ‘assurance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen’ (Hebrews 11:1). In other words, faith is the conviction of the reality of things not seen. Which means, faith comprehends as facts things not yet seen or experienced – the realities of things not received or perceived by our physical senses!

Judging by these two definitions, it is obvious or evident that faith and our senses cannot co-exist; it’s either one or the other! Faith defies human reasoning, logic, senses, thinking, etc. but is indispensable, if we are to walk closely with God.

By anecdotal evidence, it is apparent that we live in the realm of our senses or perception – ruled by what we see, touch, hear, feel, etc. Unfortunately, and we probably may not realize it yet, we have assigned a greater weight to the things we feel, and hear than the Word of God. For instance, if our senses perceive death, we switch into a panic mode, completely ignoring what the Bible says about death, long life, or our situation; thereby belittling God! This ought not to be!

As Christians, God is calling us onto a higher ground – to a deeper spiritual level where we no longer allow our senses, or what we feel, to control what we believe. Rather, the infallible Word of God should control our perception, dictate our beliefs, rule our system, and ultimately guide our behavior/actions!

Faith sees the unseen, moves the immovable, believes the unthinkable, challenges the limitations, and obtains the impossible! So when next that sickness shows up, impossible situations arise, fear presents itself, or reasoning begins to elevate its logic above God’s Word – switch to the realm of faith, by God’s Spirit, through HIS Word; believe, and stand on what the Bible says about that situation – you’ll be ushered into a realm of endless possibilities!
